Begin with the spelling you can document
Copy the surname exactly as it appears in the strongest record you have. Note the record type, year, place, and person who supplied it. Keep accents, apostrophes, spaces, and hyphens in your first search.
A family spelling is a starting point, not proof that every earlier record used the same form.
Try conservative variants before sound-alikes
Start by removing an accent, changing a hyphen to a space, joining separated parts, or testing an apostrophe without punctuation. These small changes often reflect indexing rather than a real name change.
Only broaden to common sound-alike substitutions when close variants do not produce useful records. A larger list creates more false matches, so test one change at a time.

Add a place, date range, and relative
A surname alone is rarely specific enough. Pair each variant with a town, county, country, occupation, or narrow year range. Search a spouse, parent, child, or witness alongside the person you want.
When two records share a spelling but not the expected family or place, treat them as different people until stronger evidence connects them.
Keep a small search log on your iPhone
Record the exact query, archive, filters, date searched, and result. A short log prevents repeated searches and makes it clear which spelling produced a useful lead.
Save the source URL or citation, not only a screenshot. Indexes can change, and the original image may contain details that a transcription missed.
Promote a lead only after verification
Compare age, location, relatives, occupation, and record sequence before accepting a match. One matching surname is not enough, especially when the spelling is common.
Once a person and relationship are supported by evidence, add the confirmed spelling and family connection to Family Tree App. Keep alternate spellings in your research notes so future searches remain reproducible.
